Over recent years, with the evolution of social media, the idea of people having their own branding has rapidly developed. Managing your own personal brand is now hugely important, and how people perceive you really matters.


Having a strong, authentic personal brand is important for anyone trying to make their mark on the world. Think about what makes you buy into a particular brand, for instance the styling, the quality, or the expertise. The important thing is not to try and be all things to all people as it’s impossible to please everyone. A good brand knows its market and what to do to appeal to the people it needs to influence.


People will look for your digital footprint, and that includes your carefully cultivated business output on LinkedIn as well as your more personal posts and comments on social media. It’s worth a reminder that, whatever your settings, nothing you post is ever truly private—all it requires is for someone to take a screenshot and that image, or comment, can be seen by the world.


You need to ensure that your personal brand consistently reflects who you really are and what you stand for, and ongoing effort must be put in to ensure this. If you think about celebrities, some control their brand very well whereas others fall short, for example, by being caught on a live microphone saying something they shouldn't or posting inappropriate messages or social media comments.


At the center of your personal brand should be who you are and what you want to achieve, such as your core aims. Once you have established your objectives, everything else is then geared towards achieving them. It’s worth noting that you are promoting and selling yourself—your brand.
