Japan's position on the 2024 World Press Freedom Index has declined, dropping to the 70th spot compared to the previous year's 68th ranking. This places Japan as the lowest-ranked among the G7 countries, which include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the UK, and the US. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) assesses press freedom in 180 countries and territories, defining it as the ability of the media to operate without political, economic, legal, or social interference, as well as without facing threats.

While Japan fares better than many countries worldwide, RSF notes that traditional and business interests, political pressure, and gender inequalities often impede journalists from fully carrying out their watchdog role. Despite Japan's strong presence in traditional media, RSF highlights challenges such as restricted access to senior officials and self-censorship among journalists to maintain access. Independent news organizations, freelance reporters, and foreign journalists also encounter difficulties in accessing high-level press events.

Although Japanese journalists generally work in a safe environment, RSF mentions instances of harassment on social media platforms, particularly when criticizing the government. On the global scale, Norway leads in press freedom, followed by Denmark and Sweden. Notably, all top-ranking countries are in Europe. Conversely, the Asia-Pacific region saw a decline in press freedom scores for 26 out of 32 countries and territories assessed. Eritrea ranks lowest on the index, with North Korea and China also scoring poorly. In comparison, the UK, US, and South Korea hold positions at 23rd, 55th, and 62nd, respectively.
