Japanese food is loved by people everywhere. Sushi, tempura, and tofu are some of the well-known dishes. Japanese meals are often beautiful and look like works of art. That is why it is a bit of a surprise that frozen food is one of the most popular foods in Japan.
Every year, a group called the Gurunavi Research Institute picks a food that shows what’s popular to eat. In 2022, frozen food won because the Coronavirus Pandemic made people stay home. Instead of eating out, they bought frozen food to eat in their houses. The frozen food that won was simple, like frozen dinners or pizzas that you can eat without making many dirty dishes.
Gurunavi explained that because of the pandemic, food businesses tried new ways to freeze food. They want the food to still taste good when it’s not frozen anymore. A big supermarket chain in Japan started a store just for frozen food called “Frozen.” It has more than 1,500 kinds of frozen foods.
Also, stores that are open all the time have more frozen foods now, and there are even vending machines that sell frozen food, including sushi. A business group for frozen food in Japan said that as life changes, more people like frozen food. Since there are more older people in Japan, they find it easier to eat frozen meals than to make food from the beginning.
